This weekend San Francisco is celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Golden Gate Bridge. Tonight the bridge will be closed for an hour for a fireworks display and various events will go on tomorrow throughout the city.
The event got me thinking about my many wonderful visits to the bridge. It’s spectacular, even on the many days when dense fog drowns all but the base. My sister visited me here three times before she was even able to see the bridge! I’ve heard that on cloudy days, at the parks office tourists can buy photos of themselves in front of a green-screen image of the bridge on a bright and sunny day!
Here are some of my favorite photos and memories of the bridge:
One of my favorite photos on a clear day from the Marin Headlands
Another clear day–too bad I only had my phone to use for this pic.
At dusk…
Kevin and I on one of our first visits to the bridge together…
View from Crissy Field, the time my sister finally got to see it!
This is what the Bridge usually looks like hidden by dense fog (and covered with traffic).
