Some exciting news for craft beer and urban homesteading fans: President Obama has started brewing beer in the White House kitchen!
They’ve made three varieties so far: a Honey Ale, a Honey Porter and a summery Honey Blond. They are all custom recipes developed by the kitchen team with help from local brew masters. Possibly the coolest part of this is that all of their beers use honey produced and harvested on-site from their very own beehives!
Here is a video they produced. If you’ve never done it before, this is a pretty good introduction to the beer brewing process:
One thing that I thought was funny was that craft beer enthusiasts and brewing geeks jumped immediately with petitions and Freedom of Information Act requests asking them to release the recipe. Though the White House isn’t subject to FOIA, Assistant Chef Sam Kass consented and published two of the recipes today on the White House blog, one for the Honey Ale and the other for the Honey Porter. I am excited to try these recipes one day!
Because he had never brewed before, Kass said he was surprised with how good their first batch turned out.
I’m not surprised at all. In our experience, our worst home-brewed beer has been better than anything you can find in a store! So give it a try. It’s one of our favorite at-home adventures!
Have you ever brewed beer?

We enjoy having friends who brew beer! :p I love that they use their own honey at the White House.

hehe, OR you guys could start brewing yourself! You’re welcome to come brew with Kevin anytime to see how easy it is! We’ve talked about getting bees, actually! I’m going to a class next month to learn beekeeping 101 🙂

I love Kevin’s home brewed beer! You guys should open a coffeehouse that serves beer, like this one in Philly:

I always stop by there when I visit Philly.

I would love to do that, that’s a great idea! That place looks very cool. I love Philly, it’s one of my favorite cities in the US! Do you go there a lot? We should meet up next time we get out there.

I read about this in the paper here so it has reached across the pond. I think it is cool but I’m not a huge beer fan. Possibly if I brewed my own?

How interesting that you heard about it in the UK! I guess it’s better news than all the trashy American celebrity gossip that seems to be all over the world 🙂 I do think fresh home-brewed or a small craft brewers beer tastes better, so give it another try!
