On Saturday, July 19, we held our latest #SweetsCrawl, an occasional EIT reader meetup and dessert-fueled urban walking tour. This time we explored the bakeries and sweets shops in Downtown Los Angeles.
This L.A. event was special to me for a few reasons.
First, we had several long-time friends join us on the walk. Xochitl, who owns the vegan baking company, Vegan Chica, helped coordinate the tour and brought along some of her delicious vegan carrotcake cupcakes for everyone to try. Also my friend Ruben came, and I hadn’t seen him in over a decade! While a crowded walking tour isn’t the easiest place to make up for lost times, I’m so glad we were able to reconnect.
Second, four family members that we hadn’t seen in a while, joined in the fun. Adam and Natalie live in LA — Mike and his partner Cathy actually live in China, and just happened to be visiting Los Angeles that week. They now hold the current record for farthest traveled to a SweetsCrawl!
Finally, we had lots of new friends join us to explore the neighborhood. Local foodies, Penny, Ramon and Meg, had been to nearly every single stop on the tour, and they pointed out things we shouldn’t miss and things we should try. It was so fun to learn from them and share in their enthusiasm for sweets and for Downtown LA.
While we did a terrible job pacing ourselves, gorging on the beautiful creations at our first stop (French patisserie, Bottega Louie), the afternoon was full of laughter and fun. And frosting… lots of frosting! My phone (which I was using to take photos) was smeared and sticky sweet by the end of the first stop.
I’m so grateful to everyone who came out and joined us for this delicious afternoon!
Here is our itinerary (in order):
- Bottega Louie
- Peddlers Creamery
- Big Man Bakes
- Grand Central Market
- Four Leaf Tea and Crepes
- Fugetsu-Do Confections
