Protect yourself from the sun this summer, with this cute & comfortable sun protection rash guard.
On the heels of this week’s travel health packing list, I wanted to share an exciting opportunity with you. Travel clothing company, Coolibar, has offered to give one lucky EIT reader one of the items on that list…
Growing up, sunburns were always a part of beach trips. No matter how carefully I put on sunscreen and how often I reapplied, I would always burn somewhere. My back and shoulders were the worst, as it’s so hard to apply sunscreen to those areas.
A few years ago, I discovered that female surfers were onto something. Even in warm water conditions, I noticed they would wear “rash guards”, synthetic swim shirts to protect their arms from board abrasion and their back and shoulders from the hours under the sun. I picked up a long-sleeve rash guard before a snorkel trip to the Galapagos and wore it every time I went in the water that week. I didn’t have to fuss with sunscreen in those hard to reach areas AND, for the first time in my life, I didn’t burn! Since then, a long-sleeve rash guard has been a constant part of my summer packing list.
Coolibar’s Hip Zip Rash Guard (valued at $89.50), is a cute and comfortable option. It has a feminine cut that is nicer than the mostly athletic rash guards on the market. The company sent me one to review before our recent trip to Vancouver Island.
The fabric is softer and lighter than other rashguards I’ve worn, but effective at blocking out the sun even when wet. The fabric moves easily and dries quickly after you get out of the water.
The one thing that has always bothered me about rash guards is that they are difficult to take off when wet. After swimming, the synthetic fabric creates a suction against your skin and it can be hard to take off in public without ripping your bikini top off, too (hello, beachgoers!) Coolibar solved this problem with the Hip Zip by adding two strategically placed zippers–one that runs along the side, and one at the neck. The zippers make it much easier to take off when wet. I did worry the zippers would scratch, or burn under the hot sun, but I found these areas are lined so that they never touch your skin. Kudos to the design team for thinking of that!
In all, it’s a great shirt and would make a perfect addition to your summer beach trips.
